The Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Privatisation and Commercialisation, Hamisu Ibrahim, announced plans to collaborate with other House committees to pass legislation addressing electricity theft in Nigeria.
During a visit to the Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) in Lagos, Ibrahim emphasized that such legislation is necessary to curb the high rate of electricity theft in the country.
Ibrahim highlighted the importance of cooperation between the committee and power companies to ensure efficient power supply and to address challenges faced by the electricity sector.
The committee is committed to working closely with power companies to combat electricity theft and recover debts owed by various government agencies.
The acting Managing Director of EKEDC, Mrs. R. Momoh, informed the committee of the company’s achievements, including reducing losses and improving metering.
However, she pointed out that EKEDC is owed N144 billion by government agencies, including the military and police, which poses significant challenges to the company’s operations.
