Nigerians are grappling with a severe economic strain as the price of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), commonly known as cooking gas, skyrockets to N1,250 per kilogram.
This sharp rise from less than N500 in 2018 has amplified the cost of living, causing widespread frustration and hardship across the country.
The average retail price of cooking gas now stands at N6,966.03 per 5 kg refill, reflecting a 71.23% increase since June 2023, according to the Nigeria Bureau of Statistics (NBS).
Many households are struggling to adjust their budgets, with some turning to alternative cooking methods like charcoal and firewood, despite the health risks associated with these options.
The Nigerian Association of Liquefied Petroleum Gas Marketers (NALPGAM) attributes the price hike to foreign exchange challenges, citing the naira’s continued struggle against the dollar.
NALPGAM President Olatunbosun Oladapo has urged the government to address FX issues, provide relief measures, and prioritize domestic needs over exports to mitigate the impact on consumers.
