NCC orders telcos to simplify tariff plans

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has directed telecom operators to make their tariff plans, bundles, and promotions clearer.

This decision, announced on July 29, 2024, aims to address complaints about fast data depletion and ensure subscribers have straightforward information about voice, SMS, and data costs.

Under the new directive, Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) must publish a detailed table of their tariff plans and bundle offers.

This table should include prices, add-ons, opt-in or opt-out procedures, renewal terms, and rollover policies to help consumers make informed choices.

The NCC’s guideline, developed after consultations with industry stakeholders and consumer groups, seeks to reduce tariff complexity, improve transparency, and promote fair competition.

Operators have until December 31, 2024, to transition existing bonus-led plans to the new simplified structures and educate subscribers about the changes.
