The International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) has appointed Mr. Aminu Umar, President of the Nigerian Chamber of Shipping, as its first African board member.

This historic appointment highlights Nigeria’s growing influence in the global maritime sector.

Mrs. Vivian Chimezie-Azubuike, Director General of the Nigerian Chamber of Shipping, emphasized that Umar’s experience and strategic vision will significantly contribute to ICS’s mission of promoting the global shipping industry.

Umar’s appointment underscores the importance of collaboration between industry stakeholders and government bodies, such as Nigeria’s Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy.

The synergies between ICS and the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) are crucial, as ICS holds consultative status at the IMO, allowing it to influence international maritime policies that impact Nigeria and the global shipping industry.

Umar expressed honor at his appointment and called for stakeholder collaboration to enhance Nigeria’s global maritime presence. Established in 1921, the ICS advocates for the interests of shipowners and operators, promoting safety, environmental stewardship, and operational efficiency in shipping. It serves as a respected voice within international regulatory bodies like the IMO.
