The International Air Transport Association (IATA) reported strong growth in global air cargo demand for June 2024.

African airlines led with an 11.8% year-on-year increase, driven by high trade volumes between Africa and Asia, particularly Nigeria. Demand on the Africa-Asia route surged by 37.5%, the highest among all trade lanes.

June saw a 14.1% rise in total cargo demand compared to last year, marking the seventh month of double-digit growth.

Capacity also increased by 8.8%, contributing to a record-setting performance in the first half of 2024, surpassing previous years’ levels.

IATA’s Director General, Willie Walsh, highlighted the strong growth across all regions and trade lanes, noting that maritime shipping issues and a booming e-commerce sector are key drivers.

Despite political and economic challenges, air cargo remains robust and is expected to continue performing well into the second half of the year.
