The Postmaster General of Nigeria, Ms. Tola Odeyemi, emphasized the importance of passing the long-pending postal reform bill during the ‘Nigerian-British Chamber of Commerce meets PMG’ event.
The bill, which has been in the National Assembly for 15 years, aims to separate the regulatory and operational arms of the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) to enhance efficiency and modernization. Odeyemi also outlined plans to modernize 50 percent of NIPOST locations by 2027, addressing challenges such as infrastructure deficits and security issues.
Odeyemi highlighted the crucial role of the logistics and courier service sector in Nigeria’s economic development, especially with the rise of e-commerce.
She stressed the need for fast and reliable delivery services and called the repositioning of NIPOST a national priority to unlock the sector’s full potential.
Prof. Simon Emeje, Chairman of the Courier and Logistics Management Institute, expressed frustration over the delay in passing the postal bill, which has been pending since 2005.
He pointed out that the government’s lack of understanding of the industry hampers policy formulation and sector growth. Emeje emphasized that with proper policies, the logistics industry, valued at N15 trillion, could significantly contribute to Nigeria’s economy.
