The Trade Union Congress (TUC) remains firm on its demand for a N250,000 minimum wage for workers in Nigeria, according to TUC President Festus Osifo.
During an event in Abuja, Osifo emphasized that discussions with the Federal Government on the new national minimum wage are ongoing, despite the government’s agreement with the Organised Private Sector on a N62,000 minimum wage.
Osifo revealed that negotiations have not been abandoned, but are being refined as President Bola Tinubu consults with various stakeholders before presenting the bill to the National Assembly.
The consultations include discussions with governors, local government chairmen, the organized private sector, and labour groups to ensure the proposed minimum wage addresses the needs of the poorest workers.
He assured that internal work and outreach are being done to finalize the bill, and reiterated the TUC’s stance on the N250,000 benchmark as the ideal minimum wage.
