The World Bank has disbursed $45.5 million to Nigeria’s National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) under the Digital Identification for Development (ID4D) project. This is part of a larger $430 million project co-financed by the World Bank’s International Development Association ($115 million), the French Agency for Development ($100 million), and the European Investment Bank ($215 million).
The initiative aims to increase the number of Nigerians enrolled in the National Identification Number (NIN) system, with a goal of reaching 148 million NINs by June 2024 and 200 million by 2025. As of May, 107.34 million NINs had been issued.
Despite moderate progress, challenges remain, including data management, system integrity, and fraud prevention. Recent breaches and fraudulent websites have prompted increased scrutiny and the implementation of robust security measures. Experts have called for urgent measures to curb multiple third-party accesses to the NIN database.
