Chinese automaker Changan Automobile reported a modest increase in May sales. According to a production and sales report released on June 7, Changan’s sales reached 206,792 units in May 2024, a 3.29% rise year-on-year.

From January to May, the company sold a total of 1,109,038 units, marking a 12.03% growth compared to the same period last year. This upward trend is encouraging news for Changan enthusiasts in Nigeria, where Mikano Motors has successfully promoted the brand since acquiring the franchise last year.

Changan’s own-brand vehicles performed particularly well, with 932,436 units sold in the first five months of 2024, an 11.64% increase from the previous year. Notably, sales in overseas markets soared by 80.81%, reaching 173,885 units. The company’s new energy vehicles (NEVs) saw substantial growth, with May sales skyrocketing by 87.76% year-on-year to 54,991 units.

From January to May, NEV sales under Changan’s own brands totaled 235,479 units, reflecting a 72.74% increase year-over-year. However, joint ventures like Changan Ford and Changan Mazda experienced declines in May sales, dipping by 8.26% and 13.6%, respectively.

In Nigeria, Mikano Motors has highlighted Changan’s strong performance, particularly emphasizing the brand’s top ranking in a 2021 JD Power study on New Vehicle Initial Quality among Chinese brands. Mikano Motors offers a range of Changan models, including the luxurious UNI series, which features the flagship UNI-K SUV, the technologically advanced UNI-T, and the futuristic UNI-V sedan.
