Ghana’s state-owned electricity company, the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), has announced a three-week power interruption due to reduced gas supply from Nigeria. The gas reduction, resulting from maintenance work by a gas supplier in Nigeria, began on Wednesday and has led to a decrease in power generation capacity across Ghana. To manage electricity distribution efficiently during this period, ECG has implemented a load shedding program.
The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) and ECG jointly informed the public about the load management program, emphasizing its necessity to maintain system stability and reliability during the maintenance period of the gas supply infrastructure. Despite the disruptions, ECG assured the public of its commitment to collaborate closely with other stakeholders in the power sector to optimize available resources and minimize the impact on consumers, ensuring uninterrupted essential services.
Earlier, the West African Gas Pipeline Company Limited (WAPCo) announced a reduction in gas volumes available for transportation due to a producer in Nigeria shutting down its facility for maintenance. This has affected gas supply to customers in Togo, Benin, and Ghana. The West African Gas Pipeline starts in Nigeria and delivers gas to Western Ghana, with delivery laterals extending to Benin, Togo, and other regions. WAPCo expects normalcy to return after the maintenance activities are completed.
