Aliko Dangote, the Nigerian billionaire behind the Dangote Group, recently spoke about the challenges of constructing Africa’s largest oil refinery in Lekki, Nigeria. Despite warnings and unforeseen difficulties, Dangote persevered and the refinery began operation in May 2023.

Dangote admitted that underestimating the project’s complexity would have deterred him from undertaking it. He acknowledged warnings from others, but attributed them to discouragement rather than genuine concern. He also highlighted the broader challenge of financing and political will required for similar refinery projects across Africa.

Dangote remains optimistic about Africa’s industrialization, stressing the importance of self-belief and initiative among Africans. He believes that Africa’s development hinges on Africans themselves, and not on waiting for foreign investment.
