A new report by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) paints a concerning picture of potential migration trends in Nigeria. The survey, which covered ten states across the country, found that a significant portion of the population is considering leaving due to socio-economic hardships.
The data reveals a gender disparity in migration intentions, with men being more likely to consider migrating than women. In 2023, 51.6% of male respondents expressed a desire to migrate compared to 48.6% of females. Economic factors were identified as the primary driver for both intended and past migration, with over 50% of respondents in both the 2022 and 2023 surveys lacking a stable livelihood.
The NBS report highlights the need for solutions to address the root causes of migration. Their recommendations include increased job opportunities, educational campaigns on the risks of irregular migration, and investments in social programs and security measures.
