Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) operatives conducted arrests of Bureau De Change (BDC) operators at Wuse Zone 4 market on Tuesday, encountering resistance from traders. The operation, part of routine raids to sanitize the market and curb arbitrary trading, led to gunshots and damage to EFCC vehicles as some BDC operators resisted arrest.
According to witnesses, traders frustrated by the frequent arrests retaliated against the EFCC’s actions. They expressed concern that continued raids could escalate into violence, warning that future attempts at arrest might face resistance. Traders accused the EFCC of using arrests to extort money rather than addressing underlying issues.
The EFCC had resumed raids as part of efforts to stabilize the naira, but the recent incident underscores growing tensions between authorities and traders.
