The Federal Government has announced the indefinite postponement of the launch of the Nigerian Students Loan Scheme. Akintunde Sawyer, the Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), revealed this during an interview with ARISE NEWS, citing the need for corrections around the launch.

Originally scheduled for Thursday, the loan scheme has been delayed again to ensure alignment among stakeholders and to ensure a comprehensive and sustainable rollout. Sawyer emphasized the importance of ensuring that all parties are prepared for the launch to prevent any unforeseen issues. The Students Loan Fund (SLF) was established by President Bola Tinubu in June 2023 to provide interest-free loans to Nigerians pursuing higher education.

Despite preparations being completed, including the finalization of the Student Loan Scheme website, technical plans, and assurances from President Tinubu, the launch has been deferred. The delay comes despite earlier assurances from Minister of State for Education, Yusuf Sununu, confirming preparations for the scheme’s commencement.
