Airline Operators Face Decline in Domestic Passengers

Nigeria’s airline operators are experiencing a challenging period characterized by a decline in the number of domestic passengers, as revealed by recent findings from Daily Trust.

Airport terminals across the country are witnessing low foot traffic even during typically busy periods, reflecting the impact of skyrocketing ticket prices. Observers attribute the decline in passenger numbers to the significant hike in ticket prices, with a return flight between Lagos and Abuja costing over N400,000—a staggering 300 per cent increase compared to two years ago when a one-way ticket cost N50,000.

The exorbitant ticket prices have made air travel financially inaccessible for many Nigerians, exacerbating the challenges faced by airline operators already grappling with reduced passenger demand.
