Guinea’s trade unions have lannounced the suspension of a nationwide strike that had brought the West African nation and its mining sector to a standstill since Monday.

The decision to suspend the strike comes following the release of detained union leader Sekou Jamal Pendessa on Wednesday, addressing one of the key demands of the Guinean Trade Union Movement, an umbrella group representing multiple workers’ unions.

In a statement, the union emphasized its willingness to resume negotiations with the government to address remaining grievances, which include concerns about high food prices, internet restrictions, and the implementation of a wage agreement reached with the government in November.

The strike had disrupted operations at several mines in Guinea, the world’s second-largest bauxite producer. Although the strike had initially impacted alumina prices in China, the world’s largest consumer of bauxite, traders noted that the overall impact was limited due to existing Chinese inventories of the mineral.
