SERAP Advocates 70% Cut to National Assembly Budget, Deeming it Excessive

Nigeria’s Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has called for a significant reduction of 70% to the National Assembly’s budget, which they deem “excessive and out of touch” with the nation’s economic realities.

In a strongly worded letter to Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas, SERAP emphasizes the need for fiscal prudence and public accountability in budget allocation.

The core of SERAP’s argument revolves around the proposed N344.85 billion budget, which surpasses 70% of President Tinubu’s initial allocation, marking the highest ever granted to the legislature. Given the current economic challenges, this considerable increase, exceeding N147 billion from the proposed figure, has raised concerns nationwide.

SERAP proposes a concrete solution: a 70% reduction in the National Assembly budget to align it with President Tinubu’s initial proposal. They argue that this adjustment would demonstrate efficient, honest, and legally compliant spending in the public interest.
