The European Union has emphasized the need for improved security measures in the country’s maritime sector through port security in West and Central Africa. The EU said so in Lagos at the closing ceremony of his WeCAPs first mission training in Nigeria.

This comes weeks after the federal government obtained approval through the National Boundary Commission to expand the exclusive economic zone from her 200 nautical miles to her 350 nautical miles.

WeCAPs team leader Nico Vertogen said at the event that the need to increase security in ports in West and Central Africa cannot be overemphasized. He said it helps reduce vulnerability and risk, thereby increasing capacity and vigilance.
