The federal government has voiced its displeasure over the low representation of women in innovation and technology, bemoaning the fact that only 30% of the technological space is owned by women.
Speaking at the national women’s conference in Abuja in honor of the 2023 International Women’s Day (IWD) with the subject “Inclusive Technology and Digital Education for Gender Equality and Women Empowerment,” Minister of Women Affairs Paullen Tallen made this statement.
She claims that the information and communication technology (ICT) sector in Nigeria has contributed 18.44 percent of the country’s GDP as of the second quarter of 2022, and future growth in the sector is anticipated.
She said that in 2001, ICT made up less than 1% of Nigeria’s GDP. But in spite of the rapid growth of the country’s tech sector, only very few women have the opportunity to participate in the ecosystem which is largely dominated by men.
