Ahmad Lawan, the President of the Senate, requested that the Senate Committee on Foreign and Local Loans take into account President Muhammadu Buhari’s request for the parliamentary nod to refund N9.68 billion that the Borno and Plateau States had spent on the federal government’s behalf.

Buhari is asking the Senate for permission to repay N9.68 billion to Plateau and Borno States in the form of promissory notes. In the letter read out in plenary by Lawan, the president stated that the monies were being returned for money used to carry out federal road projects in the states.

Notwithstanding the fact that the Executive had long since stopped such interventions, Buhari’s letter highlighted that they had nonetheless been carried out.  Plateau State, according to the letter, would be entitled to about N 6.6 billion, while Borno State will have a total of about N3.84 billion in respect of the federal roads rehabilitated and executed by the state governments.

Lawan urged the Senate panel chaired by Senator Clifford Ordia, to expedite action on the report and submit within four weeks.
