Despite Europe’s Need for Spot Supply, Nigeria’s LNG Production Remains Weak

According to a Natural Gas Intelligence (NGI) report, the six-train Nigeria LNG (NLNG) facility on Bonny Island has been producing significantly below capacity since last year due to severe flooding, problems with the upstream gas supply, and pipeline vandalism.

Since the 22 million metric tons/year NLNG declared a force majeure in October 2022 owing to floods, liquefied natural gas shipments have been “prolonged decreasing,” according to NGI, which cited Kpler analyst Ana Subasic.

From the beginning of this year, Nigeria’s LNG shipments have decreased but remained stable, according to Kpler.

According to Subasic, NLNG delivered 1 million tons (Mt) to the worldwide market in January with a 53% utilization rate. NLNG has been a significant supplier from the Atlantic Basin since 1999, when the first train went online.
