In an effort to reduce the price of the staple, Nairobi will sign contracts with farmers in Zambia next month to cultivate maize solely for sale to the Kenyan market. The first cargo under the agreements is anticipated in August.

According to Mithika Linturi, the cabinet secretary for agriculture, the agreement has been finalized, and Kenya will receive at least 50,000 acres of land to cultivate maize during the current planting season.

The CS said that favorable weather and reduced production costs in Zambia were factors in the agreement with the South African State.

In the upcoming month, “Kenya will sign a deal with local farmers in Zambia that would see them cultivate maize for sale to the Kenyan market,” said Mr. Linturi.
