Google and 40 US states reached a landmark privacy settlement on Monday after the search engine giant was accused of deceiving users into thinking location monitoring was turned off on their devices.

According to a release, it was the largest multi-state privacy settlement by state authorities in the history of the U.S. And contained a legally enforceable pledge for Google to provide better disclosures.

The unusual combined lawsuit filed by 40 states resulted from resentment at the federal government’s lack of action against big tech due to the impasse in Washington’s legislative process.

Arkansas, Florida, Illinois, Louisiana, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Tennessee were among the other states engaged.

In a response, Google said that the claims were based on out-of-date product characteristics.

Punch.
