The Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) ended the first quarter of 2026 on a weaker note, as losses in banking stocks outweighed gains in the telecommunications sector. The benchmark GSE Composite Index (GSE-CI) dropped by 35.43 points to close at 13,060.13, reflecting cautious investor sentiment at the end of a volatile quarter.

Despite the decline, trading activity surged significantly during the March 31 session, with investors actively repositioning their portfolios ahead of quarter-end. A total of 6.5 million shares were traded, generating a market value of over GH¢39 million, signaling strong market participation even as prices fluctuated. Market capitalisation settled at GH¢243.73 billion, slightly lower than the previous session.

MTN Ghana stood out as the market’s top performer, rebounding from recent losses to gain GH¢0.12 and close at GH¢5.40. The telecom giant dominated trading, accounting for more than 80 percent of total volume, highlighting sustained investor confidence. Other modest gainers included Cocoa Processing Company, while several equities saw little to no price movement.

In contrast, the banking sector recorded notable declines, with GCB Bank leading the sell-off after shedding GH¢2.99. Other financial stocks, including Societe Generale Ghana and Ecobank Transnational, also posted losses, reflecting profit-taking and investor caution following strong rallies earlier in the quarter. Additional declines were seen across insurance and energy stocks, contributing to the market’s overall downturn.

Even with the late-quarter dip, the GSE has delivered strong year-to-date performance, with the composite index up nearly 49 percent. However, recent volatility—after hitting a record high in mid-March—suggests investors are becoming more cautious. As the new quarter begins, attention is expected to shift toward corporate earnings reports and broader economic indicators that will shape market direction in the months ahead.
