Google Makes It Easy to Switch Chatbots: Transfer Your Chats and Memories to Gemini

Google is making it simpler than ever for users to move from other AI chatbots to its own Gemini platform. In a bold move aimed at winning over new users, the tech giant introduced “switching tools” that allow people to transfer both their chat histories and personal information—what Gemini calls “memories”—directly into its AI assistant.

These tools are designed to bring over important context, such as key preferences, relationships, and other personal details, so users don’t have to start from scratch. Instead of retraining Gemini on their likes, habits, or even family details, users can quickly import this information, making the AI feel familiar from the very first conversation.

The memory transfer process is simple. Gemini prompts users with guidance on what information would be helpful for the AI to know. Users then enter these prompts into their current chatbot, copy the responses, and paste them back into Gemini. This process ensures that the assistant can instantly understand critical personal context, from hobbies and interests to family connections and life experiences.

Importing entire chat histories is also straightforward. Google allows users to upload a zip file containing old chat logs, which can be exported from most major chatbots, including ChatGPT and Claude. Once uploaded, users can continue conversations seamlessly and even search through past chats, providing continuity and saving time.

The move comes as Google seeks to boost Gemini’s presence in the crowded AI chatbot market. While ChatGPT dominates with over 900 million weekly active users, Gemini recently reported surpassing 750 million monthly active users. By making it easier to transfer chats and personal memories, Google hopes to bridge the gap and win over users who might otherwise remain loyal to competitors.
