Leaders from Nigeria’s telecom sector joined global regulators, operators, and technology innovators at the 2026 Mobile World Congress (MWC26) in Barcelona, exploring how artificial intelligence and 5G networks are reshaping the digital landscape. The week-long event, organized by the GSMA, drew nearly 105,000 participants from 207 countries, reflecting the growing global importance of advanced telecommunications infrastructure.
Industry stakeholders emphasized the dual role of AI in telecoms: enhancing network efficiency and digital services while also posing new risks from cybercrime and fraud. Discussions centered on the need for consistent regulations, ethical AI deployment, and strong data protection measures to maintain consumer trust as AI becomes more integrated into customer services and cybersecurity systems.
Speakers, including GSMA Director General Vivek Badrinath, highlighted that the connectivity industry is entering a new phase of collaboration to tackle complex technological challenges. He noted that conversations spanned inclusive AI practices, the full potential of 5G, and strategies to safeguard users from digital fraud, underlining the importance of joint efforts between governments and telecom operators.
MWC26 showcased a widening connectivity ecosystem, with 58% of attendees representing adjacent sectors such as finance, manufacturing, cloud computing, and AI. The conference featured nearly 2,900 exhibitors, over 1,700 speakers, and platforms like 4YFN and the Talent Arena, which highlighted startup innovation, digital skills development, and venture investment totaling $70 billion. Women accounted for 35% of speakers, reflecting an ongoing push for diversity in tech leadership.
GSMA CEO John Hoffman celebrated MWC’s 20-year partnership with Barcelona, emphasizing the lasting economic and technological impact of industry-host city collaboration. With upcoming events in Kigali, Shanghai, and Doha, and keynote sessions made available online, MWC26 set the stage for continued dialogue on AI, 5G, and digital trust, providing Nigerian telecoms and global partners a roadmap for innovation and secure connectivity in the years ahead.
