The joint AI accelerator program by Google and venture capital firm Accel has unveiled its latest cohort of startups in India, deliberately avoiding the flood of superficial “wrapper” AI ideas. According to Accel partner Prayank Swaroop, none of the five selected startups were the kind of businesses that merely layer AI features onto existing software—a trend dominating roughly 70% of the 4,000 applications reviewed.
Launched in November, the Atoms program is designed to support early-stage AI startups tied to the Indian market. Selected companies receive up to $2 million in funding from Accel and Google’s AI Futures Fund, alongside $350,000 in cloud and AI compute credits from Google. The program aims to back companies building AI products that truly reimagine workflows, rather than just repackaging existing technology.
Swaroop explained that many rejected applications fell into oversaturated categories like marketing automation or AI recruitment tools. These sectors, while popular, often fail to offer genuinely innovative solutions, making differentiation difficult. The surge in applications—nearly four times the number from previous cohorts—also included a large share of first-time founders exploring AI opportunities.
The 2026 cohort reflects India’s growing AI ecosystem, which currently leans heavily toward enterprise applications. About 62% of submissions focused on productivity tools, with another 13% targeting software development and coding, leaving consumer-oriented sectors like healthcare and education less represented. Google’s AI Futures Fund co-founder Jonathan Silber emphasized that the accelerator values startups applying AI models in real-world scenarios, even if they use multiple models beyond Google’s own.
The five startups selected demonstrate diverse applications of AI across industries. K-Dense is developing an AI “co-scientist” for life sciences research, Dodge.ai focuses on autonomous agents for ERP systems, Persistence Labs uses voice AI in call centers, Zingroll builds platforms for AI-generated films and shows, and Level Plane applies AI in industrial automation for automotive and aerospace manufacturing. These companies not only showcase innovation but also provide valuable feedback to Google’s teams, fueling a continuous cycle of AI model improvement.
