The Federal Government has assured Nigerians that the 570-megawatt Alaoji Power Plant will be completed by the third quarter of 2027. Engr. Jennifer Adighije, Managing Director and CEO of the Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC), made the announcement during a tour of the plant with members of the House of Representatives Committee on Power in Abia State.
Adighije explained that the project had experienced delays, but decisive steps have been taken to bring it back on track. The contractor was required to submit a revised recovery plan, which management is closely monitoring to ensure timely completion. “Previously we experienced some slippages, and we had to compel the contractor to come up with a recovery plan, which they have now done,” she said.
The CEO acknowledged that the original completion target had to be adjusted due to the new work schedule. “Initially we had envisaged that the project would be completed by the end of this year, but clearly that is not possible. With the revised schedule, we are now working towards completion by the third quarter of 2027,” Adighije added. She emphasized that NDPHC has been providing full engineering and financial support to the contractor, removing any obstacles that could slow progress.
House Committee Chairman, Rep. Victor Nwokolo, commended NDPHC for visible progress on the project. He highlighted that many power sector infrastructure projects in Nigeria are often delayed by slow clearance of imported equipment at seaports, particularly for the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN). However, he noted that the Alaoji project appears to be moving differently, with critical equipment now in place and the project poised for completion.
With completion of the 570MW Alaoji Plant, the Federal Government aims to strengthen Nigeria’s electricity supply, enhance energy security, and support industrial growth. Stakeholders in the power sector are optimistic that the project’s recovery trajectory will serve as a model for overcoming delays in other key infrastructure projects across the country.
