TotalEnergies Marketing Nigeria Plc has revealed plans to inaugurate a five-megawatt (5MW) solar power plant at OML 58, aimed at supplying electricity to the Ubeta Gas Project. The announcement, made by Mathieu Bouyer, Managing Director of TotalEnergies EP Nigeria Limited, underscores the company’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions while boosting Nigeria’s energy capacity. The initiative marks a key step in integrating renewable energy into upstream oil and gas operations.
Bouyer shared the details during a panel titled “Capitalising on Africa’s Global Upstream Momentum” at the 2026 NIES summit in Abuja. The session brought together industry leaders to discuss investment trends and emerging opportunities across Africa’s oil and gas sector. According to Bouyer, the solar project is central to the Ubeta Gas development and positions it as one of the world’s first near-net-zero gas fields.
The 5MW plant will provide dedicated electricity to OML 58 operations, significantly cutting reliance on conventional energy sources and lowering the carbon intensity of production. Bouyer emphasized that TotalEnergies’ strategy in Nigeria focuses on growing energy sustainably, combining increased oil and gas production with scalable electricity generation through integrated power solutions. This aligns with the company’s global goal of delivering more energy with fewer emissions.
TotalEnergies has already made strides in sustainability, eliminating routine gas flaring across all Nigerian operations in 2023 and deploying advanced methane detection technology. The company has installed 2,500 Permanent Emission Monitoring Systems across its sites to ensure real-time tracking and transparent emissions control. These efforts reflect a broader industry trend among international oil companies in Nigeria to align hydrocarbon production with the global energy transition.
Beyond technology and emissions, Bouyer highlighted the importance of local partnerships in accelerating project delivery and boosting the Nigerian economy. TotalEnergies maintains joint ventures with AMNI, Conoil, and Sapetro, leveraging these collaborations for exploration, production, and skills development. During the summit, the company also engaged with students at its exhibition booth, emphasizing knowledge transfer and nurturing the next generation of energy professionals.
