Dangote Refinery to Supply 65 Million Litres of Petrol Daily, Boosting Nigeria’s Fuel Self-Sufficiency
The Dangote Petroleum Refinery has entered a landmark offtake agreement with 12 major and independent oil marketers to distribute between 60 and 65 million litres of petrol daily across Nigeria. The structured deal, announced by Dangote Group Chairman Aliko Dangote in Lagos, is aimed at stabilizing domestic fuel supply while enabling the export of surplus volumes estimated at 15 to 20 million litres per day.
“This framework guarantees adequate domestic supply and allows for the export of surplus petrol,” Dangote said. “We have agreed to supply up to 65 million litres daily to the domestic market, with any surplus being exported.” This is a historic shift for Nigeria, where daily petrol consumption ranges between 50 and 60 million litres, marking the first time local refining output exceeds national demand and reducing reliance on imported refined products.
Under a revised distribution system approved by the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), the refinery’s products will be supplied nationwide through major marketers, including MRS Oil Nigeria Plc, TotalEnergies Marketing Nigeria Plc, Conoil Plc, Ardova Plc, and others. The model is designed to eliminate bottlenecks and curb speculative practices that have historically caused fuel shortages.
Industry analysts describe the development as a structural transformation in Nigeria’s downstream petroleum sector. By meeting domestic demand locally, the country stands to save billions of dollars in foreign exchange, ease pressure on the naira, strengthen external reserves, and stabilize the trade balance. The refinery’s output now positions Nigeria to achieve long-sought energy security and reduce exposure to foreign supply disruptions.
Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) CEO Engr. Bayo Bashir Ojulari praised the refinery as a transformative national asset capable of redefining Nigeria’s energy landscape. With a processing capacity of 650,000 barrels per day, the plant has already exceeded expectations, recording 661,000 barrels per day. If sustained, this initiative could mark the most significant transformation in Nigeria’s fuel supply system in decades, solidifying the Dangote Refinery as a source of national pride and industrial progress.
