The Nigerian government is stepping up efforts to make foreign-currency savings and investments more accessible to ordinary Nigerians, including those living abroad. This move is part of a broader strategy to enhance financial inclusion and strengthen the country’s domestic capital markets. By opening doors to dollar-based investment products, the government hopes to give more Nigerians the chance to participate in wealth-building opportunities.
Finance Minister and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, recently met with representatives from Jishike Holdings Limited and Libera, the digital assets arm of Standard Chartered, to discuss proposals for expanding participation in Nigeria’s domestic dollar investment programme. This follows the strong investor response to the country’s first offering last year, signalling growing interest in accessible foreign-currency investments.
The initiative aims to reduce entry barriers, promote mass savings, and encourage retail participation in formal investment products. While expanding access, the government also emphasizes the importance of investor protection, regulatory compliance, and policies that support long-term economic stability. This balance is central to ensuring that the programme benefits ordinary Nigerians without compromising financial security.
In a statement shared on the Federal Ministry of Finance’s official X handle, Minister Edun reiterated the government’s commitment to innovative financing solutions. He highlighted that these measures are designed to mobilize domestic resources effectively while empowering citizens to contribute directly to Nigeria’s economic growth.
Experts believe that widening access to dollar savings and investment products could transform Nigeria’s financial landscape. By making such tools available to both residents and the diaspora, the government is not only tapping into a broader pool of capital but also fostering a culture of savings and investment that could support sustainable development for years to come.
