OpenAI Partners with Pine Labs to Accelerate AI-Driven Fintech in India
OpenAI is deepening its presence in India with a strategic partnership with Pine Labs, aiming to bring AI-powered automation to the country’s fintech ecosystem. The collaboration will integrate OpenAI’s AI tools into Pine Labs’ payments and commerce infrastructure, streamlining settlement, reconciliation, and invoicing workflows. Both companies say this move could accelerate the adoption of AI-led commerce across India’s rapidly growing digital economy.
Under the partnership, Pine Labs will embed OpenAI’s application programming interfaces (APIs) into its payment systems, enabling AI-assisted processing for merchants and corporate clients. Previously, Pine Labs relied on manual checks for fund settlements, a process that took hours each day. AI now handles these tasks in minutes, improving efficiency and reducing human error, according to CEO B Amrish Rau.
While Pine Labs has already automated parts of its internal settlement and reconciliation, the company plans to extend AI efficiencies to business-to-business workflows. Rau highlighted that tasks such as invoice processing and payment orchestration are prime candidates for AI automation, particularly in B2B operations where high-volume repetitive work can be handled by AI agents, speeding up adoption before consumer-facing payments see similar changes.
The partnership positions OpenAI to move deeper into regulated, high-volume enterprise workflows, both in India and internationally. Pine Labs, which serves nearly one million merchants across 20 countries, emphasizes that the collaboration does not involve revenue sharing and remains non-exclusive. Rau also noted that additional security and compliance layers are being built to safeguard sensitive transaction data as AI integration expands.
This collaboration comes as India positions itself as a hub for applied AI, hosting the AI Impact Summit in New Delhi with global tech leaders showcasing cutting-edge AI applications. For OpenAI, the Pine Labs partnership offers a route to embed AI into critical financial processes, potentially transforming how businesses handle payments, settlements, and commerce at scale, while reinforcing India’s role in the global AI ecosystem.
