Microsoft Launches Maia 200 AI Chip but Will Continue Buying Nvidia and AMD Chips, Says Nadella

Microsoft has officially rolled out its first in-house AI chip, the Maia 200, at one of its data centers this week, marking a major milestone in its push toward building proprietary AI infrastructure. The company says the Maia 200 is an “AI inference powerhouse,” optimized for running compute-heavy AI models in production. Microsoft shared that the chip outperforms Amazon’s Trainium chips and Google’s latest Tensor Processing Units (TPUs), showcasing its competitive edge in speed and efficiency.

Despite this breakthrough, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella emphasized that the company will continue buying chips from other leading manufacturers, including Nvidia and AMD. Speaking about the company’s approach, Nadella said, “We have a great partnership with Nvidia, with AMD. They are innovating. We are innovating.” He added that vertical integration doesn’t mean Microsoft will work in isolation, signaling a balanced strategy between in-house and third-party hardware.

The push for custom AI chips comes amid a global shortage of high-end hardware, making access to top-tier GPUs and processors increasingly difficult and expensive. Microsoft is not alone—other cloud giants are also designing their own chips to reduce reliance on external suppliers and maintain cutting-edge performance for AI workloads. Yet Nadella’s remarks make clear that partnerships with established chipmakers remain crucial to the company’s overall strategy.

The Maia 200 will play a key role in Microsoft’s so-called Superintelligence team, which is developing frontier AI models aimed at potentially reducing dependence on third-party AI providers like OpenAI and Anthropic. Mustafa Suleyman, the team’s head and former Google DeepMind co-founder, celebrated the launch on social media, noting that his team would be the first to test the new chip in building Microsoft’s advanced AI software.

In addition to powering Microsoft’s internal AI projects, Maia 200 will support OpenAI models on the Azure cloud platform, reinforcing Microsoft’s dual role as both developer and platform provider. Despite the new chip’s capabilities, Suleyman acknowledged the ongoing challenges in securing the latest AI hardware, underscoring the importance of strategic partnerships alongside homegrown technology.
