The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has unveiled its Spectrum Roadmap 2026–2030, signaling a major step toward faster broadband, improved connectivity, and increased digital investments across Nigeria. The policy plan includes opening the lower 6 GHz and 60 GHz spectrum bands, aiming to ease network congestion, expand access to high-speed internet, and support the country’s ambition of building a $1 trillion digital economy by 2030.
The roadmap was presented at a two-day Stakeholders Consultative Forum in Abuja, where regulators emphasized a shift toward predictable and investment-friendly spectrum management. The event provided a platform for government officials, industry players, and consumers to discuss strategies that meet the growing demand for data from households, businesses, and emerging technologies.
Dr. Aminu Maida, Executive Vice Chairman/CEO of the NCC, highlighted that spectrum, though invisible, underpins critical services ranging from mobile phones and broadband to financial platforms and smart technologies. He noted that as Nigeria’s digital needs grow, innovative services like AI, cloud computing, and IoT require more spectrum, smarter planning, and flexible regulations to ensure faster speeds, wider coverage, and better service quality for all citizens.
The new guidelines for the 6 GHz and 60 GHz bands will unlock high-speed wireless connectivity for homes, schools, businesses, and public spaces. While the lower 6 GHz band enables faster Wi-Fi with wider channels, the 60 GHz band will support multi-gigabit applications, addressing congestion from traditional networks and preparing Nigeria for future data demands.
Stakeholders, including the Head of Spectrum Administration, Engr. Atiku Lawal, and the Executive Commissioner Technical Services, Engr. Abraham Oshodami, stressed that the roadmap is a strategic blueprint for a thriving and inclusive digital economy. By fostering collaboration, transparency, and innovation, the NCC aims to provide the industry with confidence to invest, improve services, and ensure that all Nigerians benefit from an interconnected and technologically advanced future.
