Nigerian motorists may soon breathe a sigh of relief as Dangote Refinery finalizes plans to distribute petrol for free to marketers across the country, a move expected to reduce pump prices in early 2026. A source close to the refinery confirmed that arrangements are being put in place to cover all regions, ensuring widespread access to the initiative.
The exercise, set to begin in January 2026, will provide registered members of the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) and other petrol stations with free transport of refined petrol. Market operators anticipate a downward adjustment in retail prices, as the cost-saving measure will bypass middlemen and reduce logistics expenses, without giving away fuel directly to consumers.
IPMAN national president, Abubakar Shettima, confirmed the expected impact, noting that the free delivery would create immediate relief for marketers, particularly in northern Nigeria. “One of the biggest pressures on pump prices is transportation costs. With Dangote trucks covering this, our members won’t need to source fuel from importers, which will directly reduce costs at the pump,” Shettima said.
The partnership between Dangote Refinery and IPMAN reflects a broader effort to strengthen domestic refining and reduce reliance on imported petroleum. According to Shettima, the agreement aligns with government policies promoting local refining, and he urged policymakers to phase out unnecessary product importation, which he said negatively affects the economy and inflation.
As the refinery ramps up its support services, marketers nationwide are encouraged to prioritize purchases from Dangote Refinery. With IPMAN controlling over 80% of the downstream petrol market, the association assures Nigerians that supply will remain steady, while the initiative promises more affordable petrol and a more stable market environment for the country’s motorists.
