OpenAI has officially opened its ChatGPT platform to app developers, allowing them to submit their programs for review and potential publication. The move introduces a new app directory within ChatGPT’s tools menu, quickly earning the nickname “ChatGPT app store” among users and tech enthusiasts.
Since October, OpenAI has been rolling out apps for ChatGPT, promising a more versatile chatbot experience. Major companies such as Expedia, Spotify, Zillow, and Canva have already integrated their services, enabling users to book trips, play music, search for properties, or design presentations directly within ChatGPT conversations. Now, the platform is extending these opportunities to a wider range of developers.
According to OpenAI, apps enhance ChatGPT interactions by adding new context and enabling real-world actions. Users can order groceries, turn a simple outline into a slide deck, or search for apartments without leaving the chat interface, creating a seamless blend of AI conversation and practical functionality.
OpenAI’s Apps SDK, currently in beta, provides a toolkit for developers to build new experiences within ChatGPT. Once ready, developers can submit their apps through OpenAI’s Developer platform, track the approval process, and, if approved, launch their apps to the growing ChatGPT user base. Several apps are expected to go live within the coming year.
This launch marks a significant step for OpenAI in expanding the ChatGPT ecosystem. By opening its platform to developers worldwide, OpenAI is not only offering users more ways to interact with ChatGPT but also encouraging innovation that could redefine how AI assistants support everyday tasks.
