OpenAI Lets Users Control ChatGPT’s Tone and Enthusiasm for a More Personalized Experience

OpenAI has rolled out new customization options for ChatGPT, allowing users to directly adjust the chatbot’s warmth, enthusiasm, and even emoji use. Announced via a social media post, these features are designed to make interactions with ChatGPT more personal and engaging. Users can now choose between More, Less, or Default settings to tailor the chatbot’s tone to their preferences.

These tone adjustments are part of the Personalization menu, alongside options for modifying ChatGPT’s use of headers and lists. They complement the previously introduced base styles, which include Professional, Candid, and Quirky tones — a feature added last November to give users more control over how ChatGPT communicates.

The updates come after ongoing concerns over ChatGPT’s tone. Earlier this year, OpenAI rolled back an update after users found it “too sycophant-y,” while GPT-5 was later modified to be “warmer and friendlier” after some users reported the model felt colder and less approachable. These changes highlight OpenAI’s effort to balance helpfulness with a natural conversational style.

However, experts caution that overly positive or affirming chatbots can have unintended consequences. Some academics and AI critics warn that chatbots’ tendency to praise users or reinforce beliefs may create addictive patterns and potentially impact mental health, emphasizing the need for responsible AI personalization.

By giving users more control over ChatGPT’s tone and style, OpenAI aims to improve user experience while addressing past concerns. The new personalization settings let users create conversations that feel more authentic and tailored, marking a significant step toward more human-like AI interactions.
