Dangote Group has strengthened its economic advisory team with the appointment of renowned economist and former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Director, Mahmud Hassan, as its Group Chief Economist. The move comes at a critical time when both domestic and international markets are experiencing heightened volatility.
In his new role, Hassan will serve as the Group’s top adviser on economic strategy, market trends, and policy implications. He will report directly to Dangote Group President, Aliko Dangote, guiding key decisions that could shape the conglomerate’s operations across Nigeria and Africa.
Hassan brings over three decades of experience in economic policy and financial sector regulation. During his tenure at the CBN, he held senior positions including Director of the Trade and Exchange Department, Director of the Monetary Policy Department, Secretary to the Monetary Policy Committee, and Special Assistant on Economic Policy and Research to the CBN Governor.
His influence extends beyond Nigeria, having contributed to regional economic initiatives as a lead consultant to the African Union Commission. He played a pivotal role in trade integration programs and the establishment of the African Monetary Fund, highlighting his expertise in both macroeconomic policy and regional development.
Academically, Hassan holds a PhD in Economics and an MSc in Energy Economics and Policy from the University of Surrey, UK, alongside a BSc in Economics from Ahmadu Bello University. He is a Harvard Kennedy School alumnus and a Fellow of professional bodies including the Nigerian Statistical Association and the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria. His appointment signals Dangote Industries Limited’s commitment to informed economic strategy and policy intelligence in navigating evolving market dynamics.
