NCC Attributes Poor Telephone Services in Abuja to Diesel Supply Disruption

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has confirmed ongoing disruptions in telephone services across Abuja, acknowledging that the quality of service (QoS) for subscribers has been significantly affected. The Commission highlighted that these issues are largely due to diesel supply interruptions impacting the power of key telecommunications infrastructure.

According to the NCC, the colocation provider IHS Nigeria Limited, which powers Airtel and MTN base stations in Abuja, has been unable to operate optimally because of these diesel shortages. The shortage stems from the activities of the National Oil and Gas Suppliers Association (NOGASA), which disrupted fuel supplies to critical sites, leading to widespread telecommunication outages in the nation’s capital.

In a statement released on Saturday, the NCC emphasized its commitment to ensuring seamless communication services nationwide. The Commission explained that a reliable power supply is crucial for maintaining high-quality telecommunications services and that addressing these challenges is a top priority.

The regulator said it is actively engaging with all relevant stakeholders to resolve the diesel supply issues and to explore long-term solutions. The NCC urged collaboration among service providers, fuel suppliers, and other stakeholders to remove the bottlenecks affecting critical telecommunications infrastructure.

Reassuring subscribers, the NCC stated that it is taking proactive measures to manage the situation and will provide regular updates on the restoration of services. “We thank telecommunications subscribers for their patience and reaffirm our commitment to delivering high-quality telecommunications services nationwide,” the Commission added.
