Google Tests Merging AI Overviews with AI Mode in Search for Seamless Conversational Experience

Google is experimenting with a new feature that blends its AI Overviews with AI Mode in Search, making it easier for users to dig deeper into topics without leaving the search results page. The AI Overview, which already provides a quick AI-generated snapshot of key information on a topic, will now seamlessly connect to Google’s conversational AI interface. Users can follow up with questions in real-time, creating a more interactive search experience.

AI Mode, launched in May for U.S. users and expanded globally in August, allows back-and-forth chats with Google’s Gemini AI, in a format similar to ChatGPT. Previously, users had to decide in advance whether their query required a quick answer or a deeper conversational dive. This often meant switching to the AI Mode tab to continue exploring a topic, creating a split experience.

The new test aims to remove that friction. Google wants to see if integrating AI Overviews and AI Mode makes it easier for users to transition naturally from simple queries to more detailed exploration. As VP of Product for Google Search Robby Stein explains, “You shouldn’t have to think about where or how to ask your question.” Users will still get an AI Overview as a starting point, with the option to ask follow-up questions directly from the same page.

This move comes amid growing competition in AI search. OpenAI has reportedly delayed other product launches to focus on improving its chatbox experience, while Google’s Gemini AI has reached over 650 million monthly users as of November. By merging conversational capabilities with the AI Overview, which has 2 billion monthly users, Google could significantly boost user engagement and adoption of its AI tools.

For now, the feature is being tested on mobile devices globally. Google envisions a future where search is fully conversational, allowing users to ask any question, no matter how complex, and get precise answers without switching interfaces. This step reflects the company’s larger ambition to make AI-driven search more intuitive, dynamic, and user-friendly.
