Soji Maurice-Diya, chief executive officer of Nigerian Telecommunications Ltd. (ntel), has called for stronger collaboration between Nigeria’s telecommunications and financial sectors, arguing that a convergence between telcos and fintechs could unlock the next phase of the country’s digital economy. Speaking at the Technology Times Thought Leadership Series in Lagos, he emphasized that telecom operators must evolve beyond basic connectivity into digital ecosystems that drive innovation and inclusion.

According to Maurice-Diya, the future of telecoms in Nigeria depends on operators transforming into platforms that enable opportunities across fintech, health-tech, and ed-tech sectors. “Telcos have to be more than just communication providers — they must become enablers of economic growth,” he said, adding that synergy between telecoms and financial services could deliver exponential value to consumers and businesses alike.

As ntel prepares for a strategic return to the Nigerian market in early 2026, the CEO outlined a focused, innovation-driven model rather than a race for mass subscribers. He noted that the company aims to serve niche digital-first audiences, particularly Nigeria’s fast-growing youth population. “Between three and four million Nigerians turn 18 each year — they represent the next generation of digital consumers, and we want to grow with them,” he explained.

Reflecting on the telecom sector’s evolution, Maurice-Diya acknowledged the pivotal role of established operators like MTN, Airtel, and Glo in stabilizing and expanding Nigeria’s telecom landscape over the past two decades. However, he warned that market maturity brings new challenges, urging telcos to innovate continuously to stay competitive globally. He also praised government reforms under Dr. Bosun Tijani, Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, for creating a more enabling environment for investment and innovation.

Maurice-Diya concluded by reaffirming ntel’s commitment to driving digital inclusion and innovation. He stressed that telcos must no longer be seen as mere infrastructure providers but as key players in economic diversification. “Our goal is to implant ntel into the hearts and minds of Nigerians by creating important but overlooked digital solutions,” he said, expressing confidence that the telecom industry will continue to shape Nigeria’s economic transformation for decades to come.
