President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has unveiled a comprehensive energy reform plan designed to end the recurring power supply crisis in Nigerian hospitals. Speaking at the National Stakeholders Dialogue on Power in the Health Sector in Abuja on Tuesday, the President emphasized that reliable electricity is vital for saving lives, strengthening healthcare delivery, and reducing operational costs.
Tinubu warned that power outages in hospitals continue to endanger lives, especially in critical areas such as surgical theatres, maternity wards, intensive care units, and emergency rooms. He stressed that the situation is unacceptable and pledged that his administration would not allow persistent blackouts to keep compromising patient care. “Lives are at stake. We must act now,” he declared.
The two-day dialogue, jointly organized by the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare and the Federal Ministry of Power, brought together policymakers, development partners, and private sector stakeholders. The event aimed to forge practical solutions for overcoming electricity shortages in healthcare institutions, a challenge Tinubu described as a major barrier to quality and affordable healthcare.
Under his Renewed Hope Agenda, the President explained that the initiative would integrate innovative solutions, including decentralized energy systems, off-grid solar, and hybrid models tailored to healthcare needs. He noted that the plan is not a stand-alone project but part of Nigeria’s broader Energy Transition Plan, which promotes cleaner, more resilient, and sustainable energy delivery systems nationwide.
Tinubu urged private sector investors and development partners to seize opportunities in the energy-health sector, promising clear policies and favorable conditions for investment. He also called on hospital managers to move away from temporary fixes and embrace long-term, efficient energy solutions that are community-driven and sustainable. “Nigeria is open for business, and together we can build a healthier, stronger, and more resilient nation,” he said.
