Stock futures opened little changed on Sunday evening as Wall Street prepared for a pivotal week centered on new inflation data. Futures tied to the Dow Jones Industrial Average slipped by 47 points, or 0.1%, while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 futures each fell 0.1%. The cautious moves signal that investors are in a wait-and-see mode ahead of critical economic reports.
The spotlight this week falls on Wednesday’s Producer Price Index (PPI) release and Thursday’s Consumer Price Index (CPI) data. Both reports are expected to provide deeper insight into inflation trends and will play a crucial role in shaping the Federal Reserve’s next interest rate decision. The timing comes after a disappointing August jobs report, which fueled investor hopes for a rate cut later this month.
Market sentiment has shifted as weaker hiring data increased the odds of the Fed moving toward more aggressive monetary easing. According to the CME FedWatch tool, traders are even betting on the possibility of a half-point rate cut. “Although we cannot be certain, it is possible that the job market is much weaker than the Federal Reserve is aware of or willing to acknowledge,” said Tom Hulick, CEO of Strategy Asset Managers, which oversees $850 million in assets.
For investors, the stakes are high. A softer inflation reading could clear the path for rate cuts, lowering borrowing costs and potentially extending the stock market’s record-setting rally. As of Sunday, the S&P 500 sits just 0.8% below its latest all-time high, with the Nasdaq Composite and Dow Jones also hovering near peak levels, according to FactSet.
Still, caution lingers. While Wall Street has been optimistic about rate relief, weaker economic signals also raise questions about the overall health of the economy. Investors this week will be weighing whether inflation is cooling fast enough without tipping the U.S. into a slowdown.
