OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, has announced the acquisition of product testing startup Statsig in a $1.1 billion all-stock transaction, marking one of its largest takeovers to date. The deal underscores OpenAI’s strategy of strengthening its ecosystem with specialized tools that enhance the development and scaling of AI-powered products.

Founded in 2021, Statsig provides developers with tools to test and monitor new software features before wide release. Its services have been adopted by companies like Eventbrite, SoundCloud, and OpenAI itself, making the startup an attractive addition to OpenAI’s portfolio. Statsig raised $100 million in a funding round earlier this year, cementing its $1.1 billion valuation ahead of the acquisition.

As part of the agreement, Statsig’s founder and CEO, Vijaye Raji, will join OpenAI as Chief Technology Officer of Applications. Raji, who previously spent over a decade leading engineering teams at Meta, will oversee product engineering for ChatGPT and Codex, focusing on core systems, infrastructure, and product integrity. He will report directly to Fidji Simo, the former Instacart chief now heading OpenAI’s Applications division.

The Statsig purchase adds to OpenAI’s growing list of acquisitions in 2025. In July, it closed a $6.5 billion deal for io Products, co-founded by former Apple design chief Jony Ive, to accelerate AI hardware development. Other notable acquisitions include Rockset, a real-time analytics startup, and Global Illumination, an AI design studio. These moves highlight OpenAI’s ambition to build a comprehensive infrastructure for its AI ecosystem.

The acquisition also comes at a time of rapid growth for ChatGPT, which recently surpassed 700 million weekly active users worldwide. With GPT-5 integration driving user adoption, corporations such as Morgan Stanley, Figma, and SoftBank are deploying OpenAI-powered tools across their organizations. By acquiring Statsig, OpenAI not only strengthens its product engineering capabilities but also reinforces its push to deliver more reliable, scalable, and innovative AI solutions for both businesses and consumers.
