Nigeria Economic Society Pushes for Inclusive Growth, Honours Shettima, CBN Governor, and Global Economist Dr. Iyabo Masha
The Nigeria Economic Society (NES) has emphasized the need for inclusive economic growth as it prepares to honour Vice President Kashim Shettima, Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor Yemi Cardoso, and global economist Dr. Iyabo Masha at its 66th Annual Conference in Abuja on September 8, 2025. The event will also recognize other leading economic figures including Bismarck Rewane, CEO of Financial Derivatives, and nine additional experts for their contributions to Nigeria’s development.
According to a statement by the NES, this year’s conference will focus on investment-driven growth, innovation, regional integration, human capital development, and inclusive governance. The Vice President is expected to declare the event open, while Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, will deliver opening remarks. Governor Cardoso will give special remarks, setting the tone for high-level discussions on Nigeria’s economic future.
A major highlight of the conference will be a lecture on “Managing Economic Reforms for Sustainable Development: Experience and Lessons for the Future.” Panelists include World Bank Country Director for Nigeria, Mathew Verghis; Budget Office DG, Tanimu Yakubu; NESG DG, Dr. Tayo Aduloju; Special Adviser on Economic Matters, Dr. Tope Fasua; and Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, Taiwo Oyedele. The deliberations and recommendations from the event will be forwarded to the Federal Government and sub-national entities for policy action.
Dr. Iyabo Masha, who currently serves as Director of the Intergovernmental Group of 24 on International Monetary Affairs and Development (G-24), is being recognized for her outstanding contributions to global monetary policy. She previously worked at the IMF, CBN, and World Bank, and was a member of Nigeria’s Presidential Economic Advisory Council (PEAC). Notably, she is the first African to head the G-24 Secretariat since its establishment in 1971, representing a milestone for the continent in international economic governance.
Her distinguished career spans over two decades across Africa and Asia, where she has advised governments on macroeconomic stability, debt sustainability, financial sector reforms, and trade integration. With her recognition alongside other key economic leaders, the NES says it aims to encourage knowledge-driven policymaking and strengthen Nigeria’s pursuit of sustainable and inclusive growth.
