The Ghana Chamber of Telecommunications has announced a major leadership transition, with MTN Ghana CEO Stephen Blewett elected as Chairperson of its Governing Council for the 2025–2026 term. He succeeds Patricia Obo-Nai, CEO of Telecel Ghana, who will now serve as Vice-Chairperson. The leadership change was confirmed during the Chamber’s 14th Annual General Meeting (AGM) held earlier this month.

At the AGM, industry stakeholders raised pressing issues facing the telecom sector, including infrastructure theft, fiber-optic cable destruction, vandalism of cell sites, high taxation, rising operational costs, and growing cybersecurity threats. The meeting also approved the Chamber’s 2024 financial statements and authorized the Governing Council to determine auditor remuneration.

In his acceptance speech, Blewett praised his predecessor’s contributions and called for stronger collaboration across the telecom industry. “The telecommunications sector is the backbone of Ghana’s digital economy,” he said. “But the challenges we face demand collective ingenuity and partnership. We must bind together to surmount these obstacles and ensure sustained growth.”

During his one-year tenure, Blewett is expected to spearhead policy advocacy, strengthen ties with government and regulatory bodies, and promote innovation to drive digital inclusion across Ghana. His role also includes chairing bi-monthly Governing Council meetings, overseeing strategic initiatives, and representing the Chamber at both national and international levels.

Outgoing Chairperson Patricia Obo-Nai reflected on her tenure, noting that while the industry has faced significant challenges, resilience has been key. “The times ahead require us to work collectively, and I’m confident Stephen’s vision will guide us forward,” she remarked. The Chamber, which represents the voice of Ghana’s mobile telecom and technology sector, continues to advocate for sustainable growth, innovation, and improved connectivity nationwide.
