Google Launches AI Mode in Africa: Nigeria, Kenya, and South Africa Lead as Test Markets

Google has introduced its groundbreaking AI Mode in Search across Nigeria, Kenya, and South Africa, making the three nations the first in Africa to experience this advanced feature. The rollout, which begins today, will be available as a dedicated tab on Google Search and within the Google app for both Android and iOS users. This launch marks a significant shift in how users across Africa interact with online search tools.

AI Mode leverages Google’s latest Gemini 2.5 model, designed to transform traditional search by offering intelligent, context-driven responses. Instead of conducting multiple searches for complex topics, users can rely on AI Mode to generate comprehensive answers, supported by prominent links to credible sources across the web. This feature aims to improve the user experience by simplifying research and providing a deeper understanding of intricate queries.

According to Alex Okosi, Managing Director for Google Africa, the initiative reflects Google’s commitment to reimagining search for African users. “People in this region have complex questions about everything from planning trips to understanding new concepts,” Okosi said. “With AI Mode, we are making it easier for users to access the information they need while exploring a broader range of content across the web.”

One of the key advantages of AI Mode is its ability to handle longer, more detailed queries through advanced reasoning techniques. The feature uses a query fan-out approach to break down complex questions into subtopics, enabling users to uncover highly relevant content. Additionally, AI Mode supports multimodal interaction, allowing users to search using text, voice, or images by tapping the microphone icon or uploading a photo, making the experience more intuitive and user-friendly.

Google emphasized that AI Mode will continue to support the open web by prominently featuring source links in its AI responses. Early data from AI Overviews indicates that this approach encourages users to visit a wider variety of websites and spend more time engaging with online content. While the system strives for accuracy, Google noted that when confidence in an AI-generated response is low, it will revert to traditional search results to maintain reliability.
