WAGL Energy Limited, a joint venture between the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited and Sahara Group, has boosted its fleet capacity past 160,000 cubic meters. The milestone was announced by NNPCL in a statement on X (formerly Twitter), noting that the expansion further strengthens WAGL Energy’s position as one of Africa’s leading suppliers of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG).

According to the statement, the expansion aligns with WAGL Energy’s long-term vision of delivering sustainable and affordable energy solutions to households, businesses, and industries across the continent. NNPCL emphasized that the joint venture is playing a pivotal role in enhancing access to clean, reliable, and cost-efficient energy, consistent with Nigeria’s decade of gas agenda.

The Nigerian Pipelines and Storage Company Limited (NPSC), a downstream subsidiary of NNPCL, has also signed an agreement with WAGL Energy for the provision of Operations and Maintenance (O&M) services at the Escravos Crude Oil Terminal Facility. This partnership is expected to boost operational efficiency and strengthen Nigeria’s midstream and downstream gas infrastructure.

WAGL Energy has been expanding aggressively since May 2022 when it received two 23,000 cubic meter LPG vessels — MT BARUMK and MT SAPET — from Hyundai MIPO Shipyard in South Korea. These additions raised the NNPC–Sahara JV investment in gas infrastructure to over $300 million, with the companies targeting a $1 billion commitment by 2026.

Industry analysts note that the initiatives under Nigeria’s LPG Expansion Plan aim to drive consumption to 5 million metric tonnes by 2025 through wider adoption in households, power generation, auto-gas, and industrial use. Incorporated in 2013, West African Gas, the joint venture vehicle, was designed to offtake, market, and trade NLNG’s natural gas liquids, leveraging Sahara Group’s trading expertise and NNPC’s strategic energy mandate.
