Nigeria’s fuel consumption experienced a significant downturn in June 2025, dropping 18.54% to 1.44 billion litres compared to May’s 1.77 billion litres, according to the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA). The regulatory body revealed that this decline represents a shortfall of over 328 million litres in nationwide fuel evacuation. Daily consumption averaged 48 million litres, highlighting a notable slowdown in demand.

NMDPRA’s Director of Public Affairs, George Ene-Ita, disclosed the figures on Wednesday, stating that the total fuel evacuation for June stood at precisely 1,440,768,129 litres. Petrol, diesel, and kerosene were all affected, though petrol recorded the steepest decline. Petrol supply dropped by nearly 48%, from 72.36 million litres in May to 37.66 million litres in June, while distribution fell 16.54% in the same period.

Diesel (Automobile Gas Oil – AGO) showed mixed performance. Supply increased slightly by 1.73%, moving from 424.83 million litres in May to 432.18 million litres in June. However, distribution dropped sharply by 23.23%, falling from 552.35 million litres to 424.06 million litres. Household kerosene (HHK) also saw reduced activity, with supply and distribution both slipping 13% to 7.79 million litres in June from nearly 9 million litres in May.

The state-by-state analysis indicated that Lagos recorded the highest truck-out volume in June at 205.66 million litres. Ogun followed with 88.69 million litres, while the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) received 77.51 million litres and Oyo accounted for 72.81 million litres. These figures reflect the continued dominance of key urban and industrial hubs in nationwide fuel demand.

Ene-Ita assured that the NMDPRA remains committed to ensuring market stability and efficiency. “We will continue working closely with relevant stakeholders to strengthen distribution networks and guarantee uninterrupted supply of petroleum products across the country,” he said. The authority is also expected to monitor consumption patterns in the coming months to address potential market fluctuations.
