Ghana is accelerating preparations to fully implement the Ghana–UK Trade Partnership Agreement (TPA) following key discussions with a visiting British delegation. The July 30, 2025, meeting outlined strategic actions to harness the full value of the agreement, focusing on three critical priorities: revitalizing the Ghana–UK Business Council, signing Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) between regulatory authorities, and finalizing rules of origin to ease trade operations.

Central to the talks was the drive for regulatory harmonisation, which would align product certification standards between both nations. Ghana’s regulatory bodies—including the Ghana Standards Authority, Food and Drugs Authority, and the Customs Division of the GRA—will coordinate efforts with their UK counterparts to streamline procedures and reduce trade barriers. This alignment is expected to facilitate faster, more efficient movement of goods between the two markets.

Chief Director at Ghana’s Ministry of Trade, Noah Tumfo, highlighted the country’s intent to maximise benefits from the agreement, particularly the duty- and quota-free access to the UK market. He stressed that the TPA aligns with Ghana’s broader industrialisation strategy, using trade as a vehicle for sustainable economic transformation. The UK delegation, led by Trade Advisor Tess Phjppen, echoed this, stating the UK’s readiness to provide technical and institutional support for smooth implementation.

Engagements have already taken place with UK agencies including the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) and the Department for Business and Trade. The upcoming arrival of the new UK High Commissioner to Ghana, expected by September, adds momentum to the evolving partnership. Both nations reaffirmed their shared commitment to a transparent, resilient trade relationship that drives inclusive growth and long-term development.
